Hi all,
Memorial Day 2025
I speak to a lot of Veterans throughout the year, but we seem to come out of the woodwork on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. I see them everywhere it seems, and God bless them all. If you’ve served, then be proud that you’ve served. I learned and experienced things in my own military service that I would never have done had I not served.
And if you didn’t serve, that’s ok. We all have our purpose in life, and you should be proud of what you are doing. It’s important to acknowledge Veterans for their service. Keep in mind that the focus is on those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country today. Smile and shake their hand if you are comfortable with it. Up to you but remember that putting on a smile actually makes you feel better than the person you’re smiling at.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, which began after the Civil War to commemorate fallen United States soldiers. It was first observed on May 30, 1868. And over time, it evolved into a National Day of Remembrance for all service members who died in the line of duty while serving the United States of America. At its core, the holiday is a time for remembrance, honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service to the country. It’s a time for solemn reflection of sacrifice, duty, and the weight of freedom.
Many of us have family members and friends that have made that ultimate sacrifice. Memorial day is a day to honor and remember them. Some go to Memorial day events that highlight the spirit of the day and we can enjoy the company of others while reflecting and bringing people together.
Veterans organizations and volunteers will go to the gravesites of veterans and place flags on them. Others will go to gravesites of those family members and friends to place flags or flowers in rememberance of them.
Myself, I go to a Memorial day event near me each year to speak with other veterans and share experiences and enjoy the comraderie. Along with that, I look to pay it forward by helping other veterans and their families while I can. It’s important to remember the spirit of the day along with the bar-b-que and sales, it’s important to return to the spirit of the holiday: gratitude and remembrance.
Respectfully,
Mario

The phrase “all gave some, some gave all” is attributed to Howard William Osterkamp, a Korean War veteran. It reflects the sacrifices made by military members, with “all gave some” indicating that everyone who served contributed in some way, while “some gave all” honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This phrase is often associated with Memorial Day, a time to remember and honor fallen soldiers.
